For 3 years I was a nomad; more than 60 places became my temporary homes; sordid, simple or pleasant ones, very rarely deluxe.

3 years that my roots were as if in seven places; 3 years that I conjugated what is called "freedom", that I wandered, explored, ceaselessly moved, welcomed constant change, sowed, and strived to avoid the trap of an attractive but constraining materialism. 3 years, I decomposed my identity in order to better (!?) recompose it, like Bangalore, the mega-city where I spent the longest time. Before going back to a sedentary life, I chose to make a last stop in this city in order to achieve and to present a creation about nomadism in collaboration with Jaaga, the only nomadic structure in Bangalore. Like relatives of the same tribe, we had a specificity in common: both we were able to pack and move in a short amount of time. There is another community of people in Bangalore who are similar as well: the migrant workers. About 850 000 of them landed here hoping to have a better life with better jobs. They, together with some people part of the Jaaga community are the friends mentioned in the title of this series of works.

Durant 3 années, j''ai été une nomade aux racines de 7 lieues. Tour à tour, plus de 60 lieux sordides, simples ou agréables sont devenus mes domiciles temporaires. Durant 3 années j'ai conjugué ce qu'on dénomme "liberté; trois années d'errance, d'explorations, de déménagements incessants; trois années à semer et tenter d'éviter le piège d'un matérialisme attrayant mais contraignant. Trois années à décomposer mon identité pour mieux la recomposer (!?), comme Bangalore, la mégalopole où j'ai passé le plus de temps. Avant de retourner à une vie sédentaire, j'ai fait un dernier arrêt à Bangalore afin d'y achever et présenter une création sur le nomadisme; ceci en collaboration avec Jaaga, l'unique structure nomade de Bangalore. Comme des cousins de la même tribu nous avons des points communs, notamment l'habitude de plier bagages en un très court laps de temps. D'autres à Bangalore ont la même spécificité: les travailleurs migrants. Environ 850 000 ont atterri là bas en quête d'une vie meilleure. Ces derniers et quelques membres de la communauté de Jaaga sont les amis mentionnés dans le titre de cette série de travaux.

The yellow pebble road

The yellow pebble road symbolizes a nomadic path. Composed of small pebbles that I have collected during my journey and painted yellow, the trail begins by drawing a spiral pattern on the ground that becomes a road. The spiral symbolizes the continuous movement and impermanence of life; the very first characteristics of the state of nomadism of which movement, change, newness and going with the flow are the credos.

Right at the centre of the spiral (diameter 4 m), a pair of glittering shoes: an evocation of the red magic ruby slippers worn by Dorothy during her journey in the film " The Wizard of Oz" by Victor Flemming ( 1952). A yellow path like the "yellow brick road" (an evocation of the same film); a road that is supposed to lead Dorothy, the heroine, to an ideal somewhere-over-the- rainbow. Pebbles as in "Hop o my thumb" by Charles Perrault ( XII century); a fairy tale in which the young hero overcome obstacles and finally finds his way to a better life thanks to his pebbles.

The yellow pebble road symbolise la route nomade. Constituée de cailloux ramassés lors de mon périple nomade et peints en jaune, cette route dessine tout d'abord une spirale au sol (diamètre 4 m) puis se transforme. La spirale symbole du mouvement perpétuel et de l'impermanence de la vie sont les toutes premières caractéristiques de l'état d'être nomade, pour lequel mouvement, changement, nouveauté, et "going with the flow" sont les credos.

Au centre de la spirale, une paire de chaussures rouges à paillettes: une évocation des "ruby slippers" de Dorothy du film " Le magicien d'Oz" de Victor Flemming. Une route jaune comme "the yellow brick road" du même film; une route censée mener Dorothy, vers un ailleurs meilleur. Des cailloux comme dans le conte " Le petit Poucet", dans lequel le jeune héro surmonte des obstacles puis réussit à trouver sa route vers une vie meilleure grâce à ses cailloux.

The yellow pebble maze and its meanderings symbolise some aspects of the nomadic journey: Loneliness, unpredictability, so-called "freedom" of wandering and choices, excitement, confusion, optimism, discouragement... Being on the road can become the opportunity for introspection.

Le "Yellow pebble maze" et ses méandres symbolisent certains aspects du périple nomade: solitude, imprévisibilité, soit disant liberté de choix et de vagabonder, excitation, confusion, optimisme, découragement... La route peut alors devenir l'opportunité d'une introspection.

Body, soul and spirit ceaselessly moving...

In the old tarot deck, the fool is a vagabond, a spirit in search of experience, following his path. His soul is able to handle any situations he could encounter. It is the only tarot card without a number; the fool is "out of the game". When the card is right side up, it symbolizes freedom, the journey, moving forward. But when upside down, the fool is equal to lack of freedom, a forgotten soul, and by extent as an outcast, or an underprivileged stranger, a lost sheep.

Corps, âme et esprit en perpétuel mouvement...

Dans les anciens Tarots, le fou est un vagabond, un esprit en quête d'expérience, qui poursuit son chemin. Son âme est à même de s'accomoder de tout type de situations qui pourraient se manifester sur sa route. La carte du Fou est la seule à ne pas comporter de numéro; il est "hors jeu". Quand la carte apparait dans le bon sens, elle symbolise la liberté, le voyage, aller de l'avant. A l'envers, le fou signifie par contre le manque de liberté, une âme errante et oubliée et par extension un hors-caste, un étranger défavorisé, une brebis égarée.
